Roaming fees for iPhone, dear Lord

I suppose I could put this in some phone tech/customer help site but I wanted to go with you guys first because it's you guys.

So I just returned from a trip to Europe, and I had no clue my data roaming fees would be . . . as high as they are. Thousands. I just called my carrier, and they said they would send my case to billing department, I might hear from them (5-7 business days? really?)

Has anyone had any luck getting their fees reduced? It was my first time overseas and I really, well I feel, well, I had no idea, NO IDEA . . . let's put it this way, I'm still in shock and I have absolutely no idea how I'm going to pay for this.

Forums, hold me....

Data roaming fees are much higher than just phone fees when you go overseas...i think since this is a situation where you didnt know they may adjust it for you and just charge you a little. I mean did you not realize that when you go overseas you are on a borrowed network that ATT has to pay out to? its kind of common sense if you ask me...you are not paying vodaphone to use their towers...best thing to do when you go overseas, buy a cheap unlocked phone and by prepaid sim card when you arrive in europe/asia or anywhere else.

That blows. Good luck.

When the iPhone was brand new TheGrundle brought one to the Toronto Live weekend and racked up $700 in roaming charges in 3 days!!

Might be a long shot ( especially if you aren't a EU citizen using a EU provider) but try this running this new law by them -

EU regulation caps data roaming charges

New EU Legislation that comes into effect on 1 July 2010 states that “Mobile Operators will cap what they charge for data services when customers are abroad. Operators will keep customers adequately informed of the charges that apply for data roaming services".

I know someone who went to London and downloaded a couple TV shows. The bill was $20,000. I couldn't believe it, but they charge for kilobyte and the price did add up to a few hundred megabytes.

I'll try to find out the outcome to see what happened, but I'm pretty sure she didn't pay it.

Lie and say you were told that your plan didn't have roaming fees.
Be mad as hell about it when you're on the phone, but don't be a deuche either, just really seem like you "knew" you wouldn't have a problem with this and then

BAM

huge bill

or maybe don't try this...this is what my mom would do, not me. lol

As said before, the roam charges are what AT&T had to pay the overseas carrier for their tower use.

The iPhone has a setting (which I believe is turned off by default) about data roaming.

Goto settings -> General -> Network My data roaming is turned off, and I'm pretty sure that's the default. If you happened to turn it on, you won't have much of a case.

I know for my own iPhone that roaming was on by default. This is in Canada but I'm sure all phones would be the same. Having roaming on is fine when you're at home but once in a different country, you gotta turn it off as the iPhone is always looking for data. For me, when I have crossed the border in the US, I automatically got a text message from provider telling me that data roaming costs a shitload per MB so some of them do warn you right away.

Another reason to go communist. (Empty, ignorant, incorrect, "joke" statement)
