Bret Michaels has emergency appendectomy

(PEOPLE.com) -- Bret Michaels tried to ignore the pain in his stomach Sunday night, hoping he could make the stage for a show in San Antonio, Texas.

But by 1 a.m. Monday, the 47-year-old rocker and contestant on "The Celebrity Apprentice" had to be rushed to the hospital with what he thought was a severe case of the flu. Instead, he underwent an emergency appendectomy.

Michaels "remains in the hospital, is doing well and beginning the recovery process," his rep says.

"Michaels, who has been known to perform under extreme conditions that would make most performers cancel, will unfortunately have no choice but to reschedule some of his April tour dates," the rep adds.

Theformer Poison frontman who went on to become a reality star on VH1's "Rock of Love" is no stranger to medical woes. A diabetic, he's been frequently hospitalized, gives himself insulin shots and checks his blood sugar four to six times a day.

He also suffered injuries, including a broken nose, when he was hit by a set piece during the 2009 Tony Awards.

They say he had a headache, then they did scans of his brain and he hemorrhaged. Maybe because they made him take off the bandana?

TMZ is already giving odds of survival. They say that 20-30% of people who have the type of brain hemorrhage Bret had will have a second one within a month. 70% of those people do not survive the second hemorrhage. And 1/3 of people die with the first hemorrhage, so he's already beaten that.

Bret Michaels Has Massive Brain Hemorrhage, Rushed To Hospital

Bret Michaels is in critical condition suffering from a brain hemorrhage, his publicist said Friday. Joann Mignano, Michaels' New York-based publicist, confirmed a report on People magazine's website that said the former Poison frontman was rushed to intensive care late Thursday after a severe headache. The report said doctors discovered bleeding at the base of his brain stem. Mignano said tests are being conducted but did not know where he was being treated.

The 47-year-old glam-rock reality TV star had an emergency appendectomy at a private care facility for diabetics last week after complaining of stomach pains before he was scheduled to perform at Sea World in San Antonio, Texas. Michaels later wrote on his website that though the surgery "has taken its toll," doctors expected him to make a full recovery.

Michaels is currently a contestant on the third season of Donald Trump's NBC competitive reality show, "The Celebrity Apprentice." For the first six episodes, Michaels served as a lighting rod for the show's male team, avoiding being fired in the boardroom.

Trump said in a statement Friday that he was "deeply saddened" to hear of Michaels' condition.

"He's a great competitor and champion, and I hope he will be fine," Trump said.

Before joining "The Celebrity Apprentice," Michaels starred as the lothario on VH1's lusty reality dating series "Rock of Love" from 2007 to 2009. For three seasons, Michaels searched for the women of his dreams amid a sea of implants, tattoos and thongs.

He also served as a judge on the fifth season of the USA singing competition "Nashville Star" in 2007.
