Thanksgiving traditions

This Thanksgiving my family will be having cornish hens and pumpkin pie. We will also be rooting for the Nebraska Cornhuskers Friday.

What's going on at your place?

mine is such a cliche also that for the last 3 years I've just decided to stay home due to work and not waste my money by traveling.

Normally, I have a turkey and hot sauce sandwich with my cousin Tommy at midnight. Unfortunately, I'm not going to see him this year. I might still have one to keep it alive though

I make a big turkey and invite the bachelors in the family over. Takes me two days and I love the whole time consuming ritual.

Turkey prep...for those wondering (Some of us are cooker types)

I Buy a quality bird, FRESH, none of that frozen mess.
I brine over night in water, salt and sugar.
I tried the non stuffed version because of the Ecoli salmonella thing but it's not as good. I stuff the bird with a sausage, cranberry bread stuffing

Bake at 325F covered with tinfoil for a few hours then take the tin foil off. Tried the upside down thing..no good.

Sides are:
Mashed carrots and turnip (my fave)
Cauliflower and cheese (My other fave)
Stuffing (My fave)
Roasted and mashed potatoes (Also my fave)
Steamed broccoli (My fave)
Roasted carrots (In addition to all my faves)
Canned peas (My ultimate turkey fave...hated for all other uses)
and of course homemade gravy and lots of red wine

Dessert Pumpkin pie....my seasonal fave

Actually, the turkey is my least fave part of the whole gluttonous feast.
I like the mundane traditions...let's hear 'em!

my mom usually hosts both sides, but as people are getting married and gathering other obligations it's gotten a little small. this year she's sick, so it'll just be the neighborhood at my Granny's. then i'm heading to bear's family (my first extended bear family event) for what apparently is their traditional spaghetti dinner. maybe a late night snack and smoke with a friend.

Since moving to Nude Hampster, we get together with friends instead of family. Usually we do a big bird with stuffing, a cranberry apple tort, and pumpkin pies. The guests bring the sides. There is plenty of porter, ale, and wine. Cigars and pipes make an appearance. Depending on the number of guests and whether a single bird will be enough meat, I do a little supplemental meat on the grill ... turkey legs wrapped in bacon.

My mom and I always go out ...I've never had home cooked Thanksgiving unless it was at a friend's house. Hehehe.

Today, we are going to see "Flight", then dinner at 6:30 and we are always amongst the midwest debacle that is the Plaza lighting ceremony. WOOT.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We did the deep fat frying once. It's also a great way to make onion rings.

My coworker talked a lot this week about deep frying a turkey. I'll see Monday if he had the balls.
