There are only two bands I can unconditionally recommend every album:
Faith No More and The Talking Heads. Ironically I hate almost everything that Mike Patton and David Byrne have done since these bands. Now here's a buttload of albums I'll run down from skimming through my iTunes for stuff I can recommend without much need for explanation: (in alphabetical order, * for personal favorites) Amy Winehouse - Back to Black *Bela Fleck - Little Worlds *Big Business - Here Come The Waterworks Bjork - Medulla *BEP - Behind The Front *Dalek - From Filthy Tongues of Gods and Griots Gnarles Barkley - St Elsewhere *Gorillaz - Demon Days Grand Buffet - Five Years of Fireworks Incubus - Morning View *Jaco Pastorius - Punk Jazz Janelle Monae - Metropolis *Jay-Z - The Blueprint 3 John Coltrane - A Love Supreme Joss Stone - The Soul Sessions The Kooks - Konk *Mr Bungle - California My Morning Jacket - Z *Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation ... Rammstein - *Rosenrot, Sehnschut and Reise Reise Thievery Corporation - Cosmic Game Tool - Aenima and *10,000 Days *Ugly Duckling - Taste The Secret White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan William Shatner - Has Been (this is not a joke, this album is actually good, and it's got a weird track about watching his wife die)

Top 5 varies, but usually drifts through these usual suspects...
Murder By Death - Red Of Tooth and Claw Butter 08 - Butter Jawbreaker - Dear You Johnny Cash - American IV: The Man Comes Around Marilyn Manson - Portrait of an American Family Tool - Undertow Nick Cave & Warren Ellis - The Assassination of Jesse James Nine Inch Nails - Downward Spiral Solex - Low Kick and Hard Bop Murder By Death - In Boca Al Lupo I Am Kloot - Gods and Monsters Ditty Bops - Moon Over The Freeway Deadbolt - Tijuana Hit Squad While I am productive, though, my tastes turn to James Horner, John Murphy, Michael Giacchino, John Williams, Rob Dougan/Don Davis, John Powell, even JG Thirwell. Martin O'Donnell & Michael Salvatori are growing on me as well.

I'm gonna guess most people don't recognize half of those names, including or not including the ones you list in the last paragraph. I guess in the context of the original posters request, it beats a boring list of bands everyone knows about. Are these contemporary artists? I only ask because clearly Johnny Cash is not, and is NIN still putting stuff out? |
