There are both were-creatures and shapeshifters in the books. Shapeshifters can change into many different animals, were-creatures change into one specific creature (werewolves and werepanthers are both there, similar to the Anita Blake books). That's about as spoilery as I'll get, because I have no clue if Ball is going to follow the books that closely throughout the whole series.
