do you use Tivo and are you a pc or mac user? If the answer is yes to both of these then there Tivo offers software to convert to iPod or other portable devices.

Most ISPs used to offer newsgroup access...
But they typically have terrible retention, are slow, and cap your monthly transfer. So to answer your question, no, there really aren't any good free newsgroup services (unless you just want to read news). And this is very different than FTP. |

i use giganews - $25 a month for unlimited.
i use the special newreader they offer which is a one time $25. i check VCD Quality for new announcements, then i go to Binsearch -- Usenet search engine and make .nzb's, which in a way are like the magnetic torrents. the newsreader downloads the files, from there i use a PAR program to check the files i downloaded, then i unrar them. taadaaaa! i usually get 500k download speeds, so a 800mb file takes about 20 minutes. giganews offers 240 day retention and 10 connections. no sharing or looking/hoping a seeder comes online. my isp used to offer newsgroup access for free, but it was for like only 2 connections and 3 day rentention. i cancelled my netflix to pay for this service. |

Cable companies DVR and a Mac. There is a firewire port on the DVR and I was hoping it might just mount as a drive but no luck. Thanks though.

Newsgroups are Old, Overpriced and Complex
For those that don't want the expense or complexity of newsgroups, just go get a BitTorrent client (many to chose from) and google "bittorrent + {name of show}".
This is free, easy and less frustrating. |

I'm not going to read any further into this thread out of spoiler fear, but this show is fucking awesome.
It just came out on DVD so I just caught the first two episodes. What's not to love. Vampires, sexy-as-fuck girl next door main character with sassy black friend, lots of good sex scenes, humor, and great dialogue. Alan Ball is back to being awesome after that piece of shit Towelhead movie. |
