And yeah there's been severe drought for about 10 years or so. Even thought QLD is flooded in areas, those greedy bogans. Not sure about wangaratta. but it's right next to Beechworth so it might be under danger. |

The trees in front the fire certainly to combust before the fire front gets there, not sure about that actually being the start though. The oil in the trees certainly does burn well once it gets enough heat into it.
In the week leading upto the fires, vic had something like 8 days of 40c+ temps in a row and has had a total of about 2mm rain for the last month, so yeh, the bush was tinder dry. Then they got some big hot winds. The fires could have been set off by anything really, cigarette buts, glass bottles, car exhausts, etc. But really the combination of super dry heat and strong winds meant that it was pretty much inevitable that this was going to happen. I'm not sure I buy the arson claims, people are just looking for a scapegoat I think. Some of them could have been arson, but not many I think. |

We do have a big problem with arson in Australia. Something about dry brush, total fireban days and our history of terrible fires makes people want to set shit on fire.
About half of Australian bushfires are deliberately lit. Link. Today amongst all the news about Victorian bushfires someone lit a fire in Belair National Park in SA. Link. Arson and lightening strikes are the leading causes of fire in Australia. Many people see tho conditions you've been describing and see it as an oppertunity to start a fire. I have a friend who volunteers for the CFS on high fire danger days police are put on surveillance details to watch known firebugs. People are not just looking for scapegoats arsonists are a real danger to this country, and while the causes of some of the fires may change as information comes in I think you will be suprised at just how many will turn out to be deliberately lit.

Fair enough, I'm happy to be proven wrong. These guys are gonna be in for a rough time if they get caught. ( as they should be ).
I guess it depends on the definitions used too. Quote:
