Anyone used Asus Eee PC?
The amazon reviews are pretty glowing. I think I could get a lot of use out of a tiny 2lb PC.
Most of the portable things I need to do are built into the Eee (web, wp, spreadsheet, light graphics). I tried resizing firefox and openoffice windows to recreate 800x480 on my desktop. It seemed usable. I could always adjust things to full screen in either of those programs to diminish all the toolbars when I don't need them. I'd like to use xara but read that some of the menu items are unreachable on the 480x800 screen. Is the OS stable? Are there common linux apps you've had trouble with on it? What is the real-life battery life like with the wi-fi turned on? Does it seem reasonably durable? |

I just bought it. $350 for the 2G w an 8gb SD card and a mini mouse shipped. I'll let ya know on Wed or Thurs when I get it if it's useful. It'll be nice to have a wifi PC w office apps that'll realistically fit in my bag.

I've got one. It is indeed fairly sweet - out of the box it's running in a "kiddy mode" with big chunky icons, but it's fairly easy to get into a more regular arrangement with a "start menu", desktop, file manager, etc.
I usually get around 3-ish hours of battery life out of it, the wifi reception is very strong (but it can be a bit of a pain getting it to work with more-complicated wifi setups). The built-in media player can play divx/xvid videos right out of the box. It comes with Firefox and OpenOffice installed (and you can add most firefox Extensions if you have a bunch you use already). It's *possible* to get WinXP running on it (but the install is weirdy, as the Eee has no cd/dvd drive), or to replace the OS with a more-mainstream distribution of Linux. The SD card slot is disappointingly slow. Still quick enough to watch movies from, just not as quick as it could be. The full 4gb version (but not the "Surf" variant) has an integrated webcam above the screen - I don't have any idea if there's a suitable Linux version of Paltalk though I strongly recommend the EeeUser website if you want to read up on it in-depth - their wiki and forum are both great resources.
