Just watched Dark Star for the first time. John Carpenter film, co-written by Dan O'Bannon of Alien fame, and it shows. Great fun and silly. Carpenter's films tend to be great fun and silly. Recomended.

I just re-watched Freaked for the first time in 20 years. It's still as good today as it was when I was a toddler at papaw's house!
Freaked - Alex Winter It was written and directed in part by Alex Winters, who you probably know as Bill S. Preston Esq. from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. From imdb: "A company that produces a toxic chemical tries to improve its image via a popular spokesperson, Ricky Coogan. Ricky travels to South America to get a first-hand look at the chemical's effects and finds himself at a mutant freak farm. Elijah, who runs the farm, is only too happy to have new subjects on which to try his freak machine. The very chemical that Ricky is supposed to promote is the one responsible for creating the great variety of freaks." It's short (barely an hour and a half) and definitely worth tracking down if you like bizarre, surreal humor. |

I finally saw This Is The End and laughed my balls all the way off. This is the Seth Rogen I love, not the sour-ass dickhead from Neighbors/Bad Neighbours. He's a shitload of fun here, although Danny McBride and Jonah Hill pretty much steal the film. And as much as I love Edgar Wright, I liked this a lot more than The World's End, especially because Simon Pegg's character in that film was a nightmare to spend time with whereas this movie's Seth Rogen was an absolute delight (moral shortcomings notwithstanding).
Not quite as hilarious as the best comedies of recent years (Black Dynamite, Walk Hard, MacGruber, 21 Jump Street) but still well worth the watch. |

Just saw The Railway Man starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman.
Set in the early 1980's, the story centers on an emotionally damaged WW2 veteran Eric Lomax (Firth) who lives with the scars of having been a POW on the infamous Thai/Burma Railway. His one chance to escape the horrors of his memories comes when he discovers that the Japanese guard who tortured him is still alive. He travels back to the railway that broke him... Colin Firth - brilliant as always. Nicole Kidman - probably her first decent performance since Dead Calm. Stellan Skarskgard - good performance from an always reliable character actor.
