Black culture is met with a lot of racism in this country. Part of the culture is hair. Taking an example from the show, phoebe mentioned that black people are told they can't wear certain hair styles to work. It is considered unprofessional. The "styles" can simply be their hair in a natural state. THEN people appropriate the hairstyles and get fashion and cool credit for it. Unlike black people who get called things like "gangsters" and "thugs". |

I had no clue about the black hair topic at all before Patrice talked about it on a show. No clue which one but she was talking about setting fire to the hair salon? does somebody know what episode that was?
Watched a lot of youtube videos and the Chris rock documentary and wow did I feel stupid afterwards. |

I'm a white woman and I was told to straighten my hair before interviews so I looked more "polished". But for me, that is a temporary decision, something that costs me maybe 20 - 25 dollars, or free if I do it at home, and something that goes away the first time I wash it. A few of the black women in my program had spent months or years growing out their natural hair and were now being told it wasn't acceptable. And then it just follows with the cultural appropriation issues. White cultural biases against black hair led to the development of hair styles like braids and locs. Then white people adopt those hair styles, they give them a new name and claim to be starting a new trend. Hence the problem with "boxer braids" or when Vogue attributed Lupita N'yongo's hair inspiration to Audrey Hepburn instead of Nina Simone or zulu tribal hair styles (https://www.360nobs.com/2016/05/lupi...d-nina-simone/). |

So what do we think about Standhope's account? In the past, he always seemed like a blatantly honest (even to a fault) kind of person. I generally err on the side of the victim when I hear about stories like this, and I realize that his account does not proclude some physical abuse that may have occurred after they left. However this is on a $400 million scale which could be a strong motivator to lie. After reading the Standhope story I am leaning that way. Maybe I am just guilty of not wanting to believe that he would do that.

Or as a general rule if you can find something as a Halloween costume (or Karneval for us Germans - Kölle Alaaf!, Wiesbaden Helau! ) its got a good chance to be appropriation. |
