Episode 1 is an improvement over Half-Life 2 but some parts feel over-extended. Episode 2 is terrific, especially the closing set-piece.
Not quite understanding the harsh criticism of HL2 above, I suspect it's mostly a reaction to how highly the game is generally held. I will say one thing for people who find the game dull: granted the weapons aren't outlandish but they allow you to interesting things by experimenting - especially the gravity gun.
Some people harp on about the graphics but it's still spectacular and imaginative with it's environments and level design and I'd take it any day compared to bollocks like Gears of War. I mean, just look around!
Personally, I felt that Half-Life 2 and it's Episodes were an impressive statement on the development in the last five or so years of the linear FPS.
I find Valve to be a developer without peer, especially when you listen to those commentaries they did. Just wish they'd bloody work faster and release Episode 3.
