I don't see a reason why an open-world FPS wouldn't work, especially given how stale the linear shooter genre is.

I think it could definitely work. Far Cry does alright, but the shooting/action aspect of it gets pretty repetitive and the missions are all just fetch missions... get the case, get the documents, kill the guy get the ring, etc.
And like I said, it takes forever to get from mission to mission which would be fun if the combat along the way was engaging. In this case, there's only one type of enemy that you'll run into and it becomes more of a nuisance than anything else. I just want to skip it all to get to the next fun part.
