I wonder why no major indie release has been purely online yet. I'd buy a movie at 720p for $0.99 over downloading it illegally, and a straightforward talkie can be shot for a similar price to app development these days. Cut to 3 months later, with a few thousand purchases the makers have covered costs, and it starts to get a bit of acclaim in movie magazines/podcasts and snowballs. It wouldn't even take studio levels of investment. Maybe I'm just the target audience, but after what, 5 years? of Xbox Live Arcade and Steam and the like, games seem to be doing juuuuust fine whilst operating on a similar (more time consuming) model.
