Wear long pants and bring a hoodie/jacket.

I learned the hard way just how accurate this quote is:
Quote:
The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.
The day I left it was 45F.. in AUGUST!

I was talking to a local and he said you can always spot the tourists.. "They are near the pier and they are wearing cheap, overpriced sweatshirts that say 'San Francisco' on them."

Check these places too:

In my opinion, the BEST way to see any city is when you are hanging out with locals.

Create an account with CouchSurfing.org. You don't have to let people stay on your couch and you don't have to sleep at anyones place if you aren't comfortable with them.. just set your availability to "Coffee or a drink".

Join these groups:

Throw up a post asking if anyone wants to hang out.

I've been traveling for as long as I can remember. I've done the touristy vacations, resorts, wandering the city aimlessly, ecotourism, skiing, etc.. meeting with locals through CouchSurfing makes the trip a lot more fun 100% of the time. It turns crappy cities into awesome cities (Indianapolis being the most recent experience like that).

I don't know what I would do without that site. I can't imagine traveling any other way.
