I read Dune by Frank Herbert last year. They say its the greatest science fiction book of all time and yeah, it is amazing. Just looking to kill time I bought the next 2 books after it for 6 bucks. i'm tearing though Dune Messiah right now. Dune was about 900 pages and the sequels are much shorter. Dune had to explain everything about the world and the technology and the history of the universe and various cultures. Where as the sequel just jumps right in to nothing but plot, if they are all like this (there are easily a dozen Dune books, the authors son took over for him after he died) I can imagine that they would be incomprehensible to someone who didn't read the original.
