"Slaves Obey Your Masters"

Keith keeps bringing up this quote as if it is advocating slavery. This is the entire passage:

Colosians 3: 22 ~ Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. 25 Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs, and there is no favoritism.

The next verse in Colosians 4:1~ Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven.

I'm honestly getting tired of hearing how the Bible says : "Slaves obey your masters," on the show over and over again, considering the author of this text isn't advocating slavery or poor treatment of anyone.

Paul's ideas however are radical. His view seems to be that the spiritual realm is the only one of importance:

Colosians 3:1 ~ Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your[a] life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.[b] 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

Paul is advocating pacifism to a radical extreme. He is saying the physical world is more or less pointless. I could understand finding a problem with that, but the slavery thing is just latching on to the word "slaves" and ignoring the rest of the text.

There are several rules about proper treatment of slaves within Judaism, or the Old Testament: The Bible and slavery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However, it is important to keep in mind that it was Paul, who is largely responsible for Christianity rejecting all of the rules of Judaism. So all of that was either reformed or left behind.

The Bible does say a lot of shitty things. I won't argue that. For instance YHWH murders 40 some children with bears, he commands the Jews to murder women and children in the name of land and religion, he commands Abraham to kill his son as a test of faith, etc. YHWH also claims to be the source of both good and evil. In Revelation Christ returns with a sword to kill his enemies etc.

Christianity is a complex religion, but if you're going to rant about something in the Bible, you might as well bitch about something it actually says, instead of claiming it teaches something it doesn't.
Whoever has come to know the world has discovered a carcass, and whoever has discovered a carcass, of that person the world is not worthy.
