Tippers

From my valet experience...

Steve Van Zandt (The Sopranos, E-Street band) is a good tipper. I didn't get his car but if I remember correctly he gave $30.

Politicians suck. They know we'll recognize them and we park their cars right up front, and bring them up immediately when they come out to leave. But they give the worst tips. Bill Pascrell (NJ Congressman) rolls up one night, and I know who he is but as he gets out of the car he annoucnes himself anyway. I park his car right up front, keep the keys close by so when he comes out I jump right in the car and bring it up immediately. He gives me $2.

The best nights to work as a valet at a catering/banquet hall is any night where there is a police or firefighter function. Believe it or not, the best tips I ever got were from firefighters and detectives. They're underpaid, yet they still give great tips. I've gotten tips of $50+ from firefighters, and in general I did better on nights with police or firefighter functions than any other type of party, including weddings. And alot of guys show up in police or fire department vehicles, which are always fun to drive.

Worst party to work: Bridal shower, baby shower, any kind of shower. Women are bad tippers in general, and a herd of women are even worse. Not to mention the piles of gifts they'll ask the valets to help them unload and carry inside, often without any tip at all.
