I honestly believe he won't even admit to himself that that's what happened. Some people spend their lives lying to themselves so much that they get confused when confronted with the actual truth.
Like with the funeral attendance, I wouldn't be surprised if in his mind he counted the staff working at the chapel as attendants. Later he can convince himself that there were more people than just the family.
