What Keith said about going back to something you've made after not hearing or seeing it for a couple of months or so is a good rule of thumb for testing your own stuff. Songwriters do it all the time because while you're crafting the tune it's so in-your-head you can't hear it with fresh ears and it's too easy to bullshit yourself into being happy with a mediocre peice of work.
