I also declare shenanigans (sp). Oh and any evidence I present comes from verifiable sources, mostly The New Scientist, which is not a peer reviewd journal, but IS accepted as a source of correctly stated stories from the world of Science every week. Vinny15 pulls crap out of his arse on a regular basis, I just pull some out of mine to smear on vinny15 ;])

One other thing that I wanted to say is that robots will not be in essence a creature, with all that creaturehood implies of survival, competitiveness, territoriality, etc.. Think about it |

Apart from the robots that are being given animal instincts, like searching out food (the power source) and so on, you know, those insect robots that are all the rage right now & the ones that are given basic instincts and learn from them, apart from them right?

Right....but it will also lack the good qualities as well. Love, compassion, sympathy. It is an uncaring logical cold thing...making it all the more deadly.
If you cannot feel pain. How do you know when you are inflicting it on others? Because it lacks these qualities makes it no less a living thing. The is a common definition of life that an advanced robot would fit. from wikipedia: A conventional definition Although there is no universal agreement on the definition of life, the generally accepted biological manifestations are that life exhibits the following phenomena: 1. Organization - Living things are comprised of one or more cells, which are the basic units of life. 2. Metabolism - Metabolism produces energy by converting nonliving material into cellular components (synthesis) and decomposing organic matter (catalysis). Living things require energy to maintain internal organization (homeostasis) and to produce the other phenomena associated with life. 3. Growth - Growth results from a higher rate of synthesis than catalysis. A growing organism increases in size in all of its parts, rather than simply accumulating matter. 4. Adaptation - Adaptation is the accommodation of a living organism to its environment. It is fundamental to the process of evolution and is determined by the individual's heredity. 5. Response to stimuli - A response can take many forms, from the contraction of a unicellular organism when touched to complex reactions involving all the senses of higher animals. Plants also respond to stimuli, but usually in ways very different from animals. A response is often expressed by motion: the leaves of a plant turning toward the sun or an animal chasing its prey. 6. Reproduction - The division of one cell to form two new cells is reproduction. Usually the term is applied to the production of a new individual (either asexually, from a single parent organism, or sexually, from two differing parent organisms), although strictly speaking it also describes the production of new cells in the process of growth. An advanced robot fits every one of those definitions as life. Self-sustaining, intelligent, adaptable, and self-replicating and repair. and for more http://www.ars-journal.com/ars/Free_...hris_Lucas.htm and http://www.ars-journal.com/ars/Sample_Copy/139-143.pdf and http://www.ars-journal.com/ars/Sample_Copy/175-179.pdf and http://www.molecularassembler.com/KSRM.htm

Basically your expecting that robots will realy have a cognitive view on the world, But if they do its as simple as programing resatraints into a robot.
Think of it like this can a human turn its head al the wa around.... Obviously not. If we program a cognitive AI robot with virtual restraints wich make it unable to harm a human in any way then its impossible for it to harm a human. and dont try to pull an Irobot movie on me. |
