Yep - will be buying it eventually since I've listened to it so much. Love how the album opens and ends - probably the easiest album of theirs to listen to from start to finish in my opinion.

Started to learn Heir Apparent by Opeth on guitar yesterday - damn their stuff is fun to learn.

Yeah, I've been seeing lots of people talk about it. There ain't no way in shit I could possibly make it there, but the lineup sounds fucking awesome.

Chicago Powerfest 2009

I'm hoping to hit up Chicago Powerfest this May if the headliners for the 3rd night are any good. Paganfest II is opening things up on the first day, and that bill sounds fucking stellar, with Moonsorrow, Primordial, Eluveitie and Korpiklaani plus a few more. That should be one hell of a good show. I would have loved to see Ensiferum and Turisas back on the bill from last year, but I really look forward to seeing Moonsorrow, Primordial and Korpiklaani for the first time. And then of course seeing Eluveitie again will be fucking great! I love those guys.

But they just announced the addition of Soil and DevilDriver as being the last 2 bands for the second night, which felt like a kick straight to the nuts. Gah, Soil? SOIL? Seriously?! Last year we had Testament and Iced Earth close out the last 2 nights. And it was Iced Earth's first live show with Matt Barlow back behind the mic. Goddamn was that an exciting show. I suppose DevilDriver should put on an okay show... their new album is... well... not shit. But Soil? Come on now.

Either way, they still have a pretty solid bill with Novembers Doom and Kiuas plus Assailant, Sheephead and Mindwarp Chamber. I'm really hoping the guys in charge of this thing get some good bands to close out the whole shebang. But yeah, should be a good extended weekend of boozing and headbanging with some friends if things pan out. Anyone else plan on hitting up some shows in the near future?

Beyond Tool, the closest I could come to loving Death Metal is this song by Secret Chiefs 3: Exterminating Angel.

Other than that, metal seems like it's trying too hard.

C'mon...Iced Earth?? Yeesh.

I actually really like Devildriver's latest album, from 2007, and this is coming from someone who hates Dez Fafara. I hear a new one is in the works.

I had no idea who Dez was before DevilDriver, and The Fury of Our Maker's Hand immediately sold me on the band. The Fury is a fucking great album, and the first half of The Last Kind Words is phenomenal.

Also, don't bust on Iced Earth when they're being compared to Soil. Iced Earth is a B-squad metal band, but they still kick the piss out of Soil.

Hell yes dude. I bought tickets for Paganfest II the day the date was posted for the venue. Ensiferum and Turisas were great, but Moonsorrow, Korpiklaani, and Eluveitie make up for it. Let's face it, Eluveitie was the strongest band of Paganfest I. They fucking rule live.

And, to be honest, I'm kind of glad Tyr is off the list. I love those guys, but holy shit, coming on after Eluveitie destroyed them.
