Whoever did the video is a silly goose but this new piece by Oscura is amazing, as the whole new album. Technical yet ass-ripping metal at its finest. some jazzy passages even remind me the great Cynic/atheist school.

It's the Soundwave festival touring Australia at the moment. Been to 2 out of the 3 they've had and they've been awesome. Heavy music ALL day.
And it's tomorrow here in Perth! Soundwave Festival |

I am hoping to have enough money to go to Rites of Darkness in December in Texas. I mean, fuck...if I can scrape enough together to get to MDF, I can get to San Antonio in 9 months, right?
I'm also a lazy dick and don't feel like posting a link, but the lineup is insane and I will go to Texas to see Mournful Congregation. Last edited by metal_martha_stewart; 03-08-2011 at 03:20 PM. |

Soundwave 2011
Soundwave was awesome but so exhausting. I ended up leaving at 8pm when Iron Maiden started - I know! Sacrilegious! But I've never really listened to them and I'd had 9 hours in the hot sun all day and was about to collapse.
Here are the bands I checked out (not as "metal" as some of you are into, I'm still only scraping the surface with the amount of awesome shit out there). * Queens of the Stone Age - loud, tight and fuckin awesome. * Slayer - played on a small stage, bad idea. There were thousands of Slayer diehard fans trying to watch them with no room to get into the small area. I watched for a bit but I was looking into the sun and could only see the back of some big fucks' head. They sounded great though. * Primus - slow to start for me but every song got better. Watching Les Claypool play bass makes me laugh. Its so amazing how fast and fluid his fingers move. They played a couple new songs too which sounded like typical Primus (weird but catchy). * Slash - watched 3 songs for the spectacle more than anything. I got the point and it was cool to see Slash in person but the music wasn't doin it for me. * 30 Seconds To Mars - didn't go watch them but they were playing next to the stage that One Day As A Lion were about to play on. The only good thing about this band is when they let a shit tonne of people on stage and some of the chicks wanted the singer to see their boobs. * One Day as a Lion - impossible not to move when they started playing. Funky and heavy, killer drummer. * Bullet For My Valentine - I like the music, lyrics and vocals are pretty shite but they put on a good show. More boob flashers too. * Stone Sour - only caught a couple songs before Primus. Don't know their stuff very well but the singer was a madman and some of the riffs were awesome. * Murderdolls - had to see these guys play again after seeing them support the Foo Fighters a few years back. Funny, heavy and really got the crowd going. Aside from all the jokes, they're really good at what they do. * Dimmu Borgir - saw 4 songs because I'd heard their name so many times I couldn't not see them. Liked it, haven't heard much of that style before (is it doom or something?) but I wouldn't mind checking out a cd. Any suggestions? * Monster Magnet - the main guy has packed on the pounds but they played ok I guess. Don't know their music very well but had been told to check them out by others. * Sevendust - Another band I don't know much about but the sound was huge and they were great with the crowd. I'm a sucker for groove and they had shit loads of it.The drummer looked like a blond Carrot Top with dreadlocks. Weird. * Melvins - Caught 1.5 songs on my way out and wished I'd stayed longer. Another band I've heard the name of many times over the years but never heard. I loved what I heard/saw and will definitely check out more. * 36 Crazyfists - Watch half a song and was over it. I've listed to a cd of theirs and liked it but the screamo thing just wasn't sitting right with me that day. * Ill Nino - lame lyrics and occasionally woeful vocals. But like Sevendust, they've got heavy groove orientated riffs that I love. The singer asked how everyone was doing after every song and thanked us for sharing our hearts with them about 5 times. I get appreciating the fans but take it easy. * All That Remains - Caught the last 3 songs, don't know their stuff too well but will check out more. * The Sword - hell yeah. Aside from the vocals being EQ'd horribly and too loud, these guys were one of the highlights of the day. And I need to find out what the guitar the lead singer had. It will be mine. Oh yes. * Taking Dawn - caught these guys after just getting in the gates and missing the band that brought me to the festival early, Lacrymae. Taking Dawn were fun, got the small crowd worked up with their... "hair metal" and humor. The lead guitarist/singer jumped into the crowd, guitar and all, to rock out with everyone and was a pro. Even with a small crowd they acted as though they were playing to a packed stadium - that's the way a band should play every time. I wasn't intending on "reviewing" (albeit terribly) just now but there you go. There were too many bands that day playing on opposite sides of the huge showgrounds with a packed capacity to be able to catch everyone I wanted to check out. But as it stood I only had about 30 minutes all up of getting food, toilet and walking without seeing music. Great day, can't wait for next year.
