On a side note if you think about this oppression issue this is nothing new. It gay marriage now but before that it was african american civil rights and before that women rights vote, native american rights and so on.

After all the gays get marriage rights, we can work on abolishing marriage altogether. And the state will stop putting qualifications of worth on a person's mating habits, gay or straight.

More of a question on right of power of attorney, inheritance, medical insurance, etc... and such, no?

You could argue to change it to designated partner, but to avoid arbitrary assignments and the associated mess that would bring, you would have to provide legal boundaries, which I would think means you're basically changing the legal concept from one name to another.
