This is my new .870 slug gun. Got it for 200 bucks so I'm pretty proud of it. I forget this thread is around sometimes!

I don't own any guns....the closest I've ever had is a few paintball guns when I was younger and a really nifty lighter that would turn on by pulling the trigger.

I've really wanted a gun lately, just to learn how to shoot. I'd like to be a good shot so if worse came to worse and I needed to actually use a gun I could defend myself and not necessarily kill somebody....and actually defend myself, not shoot the wall behind the offender and get myself owned in the process...

I almost bought an airsoft gun, cause I figured for target practice that wouldn't be too bad and I wouldn't have to go through the process of getting any sort of permit...but I have no idea if being a goodshot with one of those would make you a good shot with the real deal.

I probably won't get a gun anytime soon, but any advice on how to be a good shot? Do I just need to be an actual gun, what's the process of getting a permit like? And is every gun different? Like...might I have good accuracy with a shotgun but not know what I'm doing with a rifle? Or can ya pretty much get the jist with one and then all?

You don't need a permit to buy a gun, just to conceal/carry... better off just buying a real gun

My advice is practice. You don't need a permit to buy a handgun, and the CCW permit varies from state to state, but it's typically a class then you send in an application with fingerprints (for the FBI) and wait for a permit. Lot's of guns are different, and to make matters worse, many are even different within the same grouping (I.E. glock pistols feel different when you shoot them from a ruger or springfield IMO).

Hope that helps! Best advice, find a local shooting range, rent one of their guns and put some rounds down range... see what feels good, then get one. It's better to have a gun and not need one then need a gun and not have one my friend

Yes every gun is different. I know people who can throw up 2 clip 2 inch groupings with a pistol but can't do shit with a long gun at 50 yards, or shoot a shot gun to save their life. I'd say personally I'm above average at best, good enough I feel very confident in my hunting and self defense ability.

As for permits, every state is different. In Illinois you have to have a FOID card to even purchase ammo. I would check out the laws in your own state.

As for the airsoft guns, I have 4 different airsoft guns myself. As for helping your accuracy with firearms it's debatable, I just enjoy playing with them. It can't hurt your accuracy in the very least. If you're a very green firearms user it probably could help you.

Practice, particularly practice with a gun that you might use, is the key. Don't get sucked into buying a firearm with very expensive ammunition as a starter. Look at .22's, .38sp's, and 9mm's. Mosin Nagants are also inexpensive and there is plenty of cheap surplus ammo available.

I've gone shooting with my bro from another mo. He's a card carrying member of the NRA. It was good clean fun.

I don't think I could justify owning a gun, although I do support the freedom to bear arms. I think Doug Stanhope and Marc Maron both put it best when they basically said that if they bought a gun, they'd probably end up shot with it, one way or another.

Not that all people will, just that I'm in the category of people who would.

This is probably my favorite just because of the story. My great-grandpa bought this for my Grandpa in 1940 or '41 for $1 from either a black man or an indian (he doesn't remember exactly which.) My grandpa would walk to school and leave this in some bushes along the way, and on the way home he would pick it back up and go hunting for dinner. I test fired it (works fine) and I've cleaned the rust of it, but otherwise I'm going to leave it as is.
