Basterds!

I just caught Inglorious Basterds.

I only read the first "Chapter" of the screenplay and I'm very glad I didn't go any further. Don't read shit about it. Just go see it. Not knowing is a lot of the fun (that, and the awesome violence, humor, and kick-ass everything).

The theater was nearly full and had a lot of college-age kids in it, unlike a lot of the Tarrintino stuff I've seen in the past. They must have done a lot better job promoting it to a wide audience (that, or there weren't any shitty PG-13 comic book movies out this week).

Go see it now, thank me later. Discuss it in white text below.

I'm not super-amped but I'll probably see it this weekend just because it's Tarantino. I don't get down with war exploitation flicks and Brad Pitt sounds stupidly hamtastic in the trailers and clips but I heard most of the film is in sexy French and German with subtitles and the Basterds are mostly just support characters so maybe it's better than it looks.

Spoilers:

Warning:
This thread is filled with spoilers

Brad Pitt hasn't been such an interesting awesome character since True Romance. His about-to-break-up-laughing quality is good for that role. Nothing like a smart ass Nazi killer. Pitt is best when he has slightly comedic roles.

I was taken completely off guard that the thing didn't follow real history. I'm sitting there watching waiting for all the good guys to die, and they don't.

It was the best violence of any movie in a long while. Sick shit on camera and about half of it worked as comedy.

I was beginning to worry that QT was using too many drugs to make a masterpiece again. I don't think so any more.

Thumbs up

I went to see it last night. I knew pretty much nothing about it but Tarantino had said that it's his "masterpiece". I really enjoyed it. Especially that it didn't follow true history. That was aces. And all the blood and scalping.

Two thumbs up!

Happy now? BTW Jeff - Go fuck yourself!

I get you, but I say 'film-making' because to me he can be great at not only the dialogue, but also with his camera placement, action choreography and music. And the idea of having Laurent's face projected like that is a really inspired, clever piece of imagery, it's just that the impact is kind of muffled by the fact we've been watching these characters for two hours who are mostly whacky cartoon caricatures built from movie references instead of human beings. It's like a really well shot goofy comedy that changes its mind and wants me to feel a whole shitload of drama at the end but that doesn't work because the film hasn't earned it.

And it's kind of a shame because it starts off so brilliantly.

I too liked it, but it only came out even with what I believe it should have been.

The movie was portrayed to be a gung-ho, kill them nazis bastards kind of movie with no side plot. In all of the television spots, the American troops were portrayed, not the French cinema owner or the SS officer. I went in thinking it was gonna be a bloody, cursing, fuckin'-a type of flick. In the process, I completely forgot about Tarantino's hand in the whole deal.

Being said, I'm not a fan of his work. I believe he takes too long to develop a scene and the dialogue goes on frever until a good part which is quickly put away. Kill Bill was an example of this with the "wiggle your big toe" and the talking scenes with Bill in the end. Grindhouse also sucked (but sucked way more) because of them sitting in the bar and talking about nonsense until the guy killed the chick in his vehicle. And it just was a horrible movie. His attributes to his other works, such as the use of toilets to make a change in events for the main character and the use of flashbacks, were used too much as they are always predictable. A friend of mine that works in Troublemaker Studios (Robert Rodriguez's deal) once told me that Quentin has a foot fetish. Go back and in all his films, there is a big foot scene. Whether it be the turn of events in Inglorious Basterds (spoiler) with the shoe or the "Wiggle your big toe" in Kill Bill. There's always one.

I wish they didn't use the same strange soundtrack that he uses in every film. I also wish he hadn't had used his strange cut aways with the 70's theme. I wish he would have made a good war movie that was easy to watch and still as entertaining and funny as Inglorious Basterds.

Overall, if you didn't want to read all that, I liked the movie, but had hoped for something different. I know everyone that is a movie buff can swoon over his cinematics and edgy business, but I'm a normal movie-goer, who just wants to be entertained. Much like the rest of America.

Go see it if you like him, go see it if you don't. I'm not the one tellin' you how to run it.
