Thumbs up Netflix

My posts tend to ramble, I'll summarize at the end if you just want my point.

I started this mostly because KATG have netflix as a sponsor, but it's good info too.

I have been using Netflix for several years. Thing is... I've only been with them for around a year this time around.

I started using them in '01 (give or take). Back then, the closest shipping facility was about 500 miles from here. I live in Wichita KS and the closest facility was in Dallas TX. Even then, they used first class mail, which was only two days in the mail. The service was amazing. I would return a movie on Monday, and they would receive it on Wednesday. They always got it out in that same day's mail, which would mean that I got it back on the following Friday.
I had the "3" plan, which means you can have 3 movies out at once. When Netflix was in Dallas (and later when they expanded to KC) I ended up with three movies every week. It was about $20. I ended up getting a dozen movies every month for $20. The selection was AMAZING and I was addicted.

Later, I upgraded to the "6" plan. For about $40/month, I ended up with 6 discs every week. Mix in some TV show DVD's and I had over 14 hours of video to watch every week. I found myself only watching television for the news, which I could get off-air for free, so I canceled my cable. I never missed cable, or the cable bill. My netflix membership was slightly less than my cable bill anyhow. Best thing about using Netflix as an alternative: I NEVER saw a commercial.

Sometime about three years ago, everything went to shit. Later I learned that it was the "throttling" practice which was in the news for a while. Netflix started using software that identified users like me that were getting too good of a deal, and would delay shipping, or ship films from netflix warehouses far from my home. This destroyed the service for me. I actually called Netflix to see if something was going on (which they denied). After Netflix told me nothing had changed, I called the post office to complain. I only found out about what was going on around a year later when the lawsuit was in the news. By then, I had canceled the service anyhow.

About a year ago, I received an email from netflix. It was to notify me that they had lost the class action "throttling" lawsuit and that I was entitled to free rentals for a month as part of the settlement. I decided there would be no loss in taking the free rentals, and I could find out if the lawsuit changed their practices.

The result: everything is awesome! After my free month, I signed up again. They don't use the throttling software any more. Even better, they added a shipping facility in my town, so the shipping is always next day: I send on Monday, they receive and ship on Tuesday, I receive a new film on Wednesday. It is quite impressive that they have a facility in my town because the population is only around 500,000. I am only on the 3-plan and I get 5-6 DVDs every week (ends up being about 25discs/month). I only pay $17.99+tax/month, and I never go to the video store again. Every imaginable title is available. Again, I got rid of cable: <$20/month for 50+ hours of commercial-free 480p 5.1-sound video every month.

Also, for people who have HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, they will send you that format when available at no extra charge.

In summary, the Netflix service is amazing. They learned from past mistakes (and litigation) and they behave like a business which is hungry for customers. They work hard to earn and to keep business. It is the best deal out there in home entertainment. I have been using it for over three years and highly recommend it. If you aren't using it sign up: you will be delighted and KATG get paid!

My girl and I have used netflix for six years and they have never dropped the ball once. They have most everything ever made and are so affordable, fast and reliable, it's kinda scary. If you watch a lot of movies, you need netflix.

I had been contemplating signing up for awhile. Now I am convinced and am glad I waited so that it will help KATG out.

Thanks!
Is there a place where those of us who already have memberships to go so that they can count us as well?

I doubt it, but it's worth a shot if there is.

P.S.

I love Netflix as well...and I'll willingly admit that I rent to own.

DVD Decryptor and Nero Recode= software from the gods!!! *angels singing*

I wanted to communicate to anyone who, like myself, fired Netflix over the throttling practice. Netflix doesn't use throttling any longer and the service is better than ever. It really is much better than cable if you are a person who watches less than 2 hours of television per day.
