OK, sure, maybe at this age you're right. I've known too many cats that have never outgrown this malicious behavior.

It could be that his bladder isn't growing at the same rate he is and he just can't control it sometimes.

Malicious implies that they are doing it on purpose/for a purpose to cause harm and/or destruction.

In the wild, animals piss on whatever they please or to mark their territory. It's an inborn instinct, and if anything, it's done out of a feeling of necessity, or accident (imo. Again, I've never had cats, so...).

if you've received the glares that I have from cats while they or immediately after they've defecated in my shoes or pissed on the kitchen counter than you might believe it's malicious.

A squirt gun will work too but the bottle can sit next to your remote/computer/nightstand for weeks on end without leaking. My wife has 2 cats (with claws)and I've trained both this way and they haven't ever messed up anything since they were kittens. That being said I like dogs (works on them too).

It also requires never going to work and monitoring your cat every waking moment. I used the same method to train my cat, but like I said, she was not destructive at all. If Jeff's cat wants to destroy stuff, it will just learn to wait until he's gone to work before it comes out and claws furniture. The water bottle method could simply train the cat to hide from Jeff when he's home, not that it's bad to scratch furniture.

oh please, I'm not attacking you for fuck sake. I haven't said anything critical of anyone (in this thread). All I've said is that cats are fucking awful beasts, but if you are going to have them treat them decently and don't mutilate them.
