My physics buddy wanted to have an end of the world party for it.
Apparently they're gonna fire it up at "10th September 2008 - 9am CEST (GMT+2)" which we think is 2 am EST Wednesday morning. Not sure if we did that wrong though. There's also supposed to be a webcast but I can't seem to find the link. If anyone has it we should all "black hole" together. |

None of the professors from the physics department I've talked to here at UT Austin seem to be worried when the subject comes up, but I guess talking about how it'll be the end of the world makes for a better news story.

Ya definitely. At this point it's a joke but I do find the whole experiment interesting.
Also I found the webcast link: http://webcast.cern.ch/index.html Seems to not be broadcasting just yet. |

The current experiments are nothing, not a problem. It's the future experiments in 2012--when the Mayan calendar ends--that will send the world back in time to 2004--when the world ends-- that are the real problem.
Far more likely is that millions of people, all over the planet, and with no apparent pattern, will shit themselves at the same time. The mainstream media won't tell you about this, but it's gonna happen. When someone shits themself, point and laugh. If it's you, HaHa. Or everything will go just fine, next day, Yosemite blows up. Ooops. Or come Thursday, toast give you cancer. Immediately. Incurable. Most everyone lives and is fine, but what's the point? |

For some reason when I think of particle accelerators I get so excited. The idea of accelerating sub-atomic particles to near light speed and smashing them against each other in hopes of having them shatter is fascinating. Once scientists learn how to break the Strong Force(the force that holds the innards of protons and neutrons together, and possibly the strongest force ever known) the door of possibility will swing open. I mean if they can harness this destructive power we can start building our Death Star! *SCHLURP!* But seriously, if they can break down atoms, and they learn how to rebuild them, THATS FUCKING TELEPORTATION RIGHT THERE! FUCK YOU GUYS I WANT MY PORTAL GUN!!!
They're going to start testing on Sept 10th, but thats just when they'll start the machine. Who knows how long it's going to take before a collision takes place. Last edited by Astigos; 09-09-2008 at 11:39 PM. |
