RIGHT?

I think some of us have forgotten this...
:c
Right! I think the time limit is just there so we keep the suggestions rolling. There's no limit on when you can discuss or watch the movie. I'm actually considering starting a once a week film club based on this model in my small town. Mainly, because its awesome and also it seems like a good way to hit on some ladies.

right i'm back in the game! got on top of my work and now have time for cinema

Watched half of Lady Vengeance, i had to stop, i just couldnt get into it. im sure its a great film but i usually cant get into subtitled movies, i feel like i loose half the character of each person because it removes dialogue almost entirely and is frustrating as balls when there is loads of visual stuff to look at but you can only focus on the the bottom tenth of the screen.

Anyways im back into film club (if anyone noticed i had left :P )

Bring on the films! im glad to see this hasn't fizzled out

I'm excited to watch Lady Vengeance-- it's not something I would EVER choose on my own. I've never even heard of this director, but everyone seems to think highly of his other films. Exciting. Exactly what Film Club is about, I think.

I'll have to watch it tomorrow night as I've had the craziest day ever and just got home...

Night night, Film Clubbers.

I went through a "foreign film phase" where for a few months I only watched subtitled movies, a lot of them were Spanish and Argentinian, and Spanish being the only foreign language I'm completely fluent in, I realized that subtitles always leave so much out. Not every single word spoken is written on the screen, sometimes (obviously) jokes and innuendos are lost in translation. Sometimes words are said with a certain tone/infliction that you might not catch things like sarcasm because you don't speak the language and are just reading the literal words on the screen.

That's what bugs me about subtitled films, not so much having to read the subtitles while paying attention to the action, but knowing that I'm not getting the full impact of the film because language plays such an essential role in relaying emotion/meaning.

That said, it also bugs me when I know the language and it's subtitled..because I find myself reading the subtitles anyway, while listening and knowing what's being said, and I kinda don't fully listen or fully read because my brain's trying to do both.

On the flip side, you'd miss the full impact of the Sinatra scene in Dogtooth if you only spoke Greek.

This is exactly what i mean! Dude, you nailed it, you just feel like your missing out on half the film and being a drama student i know how much actors can put into dialogue to convey emotion and what not. you might as well be reading the script

that being said, i studied spanish for 3/4 years and Benicio Del Toro films are some of my favourite ever pieces of cinema! obviously im not fluent but i could focus on the dialogue a lot more and didnt have to worry so much about the subtitles to understand what was going on...

god i sound pretentious...

anyway trying not to sound too british here but could we maybe not choose too many subtitled films in the future?

agreed. (plus im american, so maybe its just something hated by most people). they should use voice overs, but good ones, not corny '70s kung fu type. some that would help the story

Maybe the Greek version has american Subtitles for Sinatra?

I don't mind sub-titles at all. Then again, this opinion comes from a guy who reads film scripts on his commute for entertainment, <3 my Kindle.

I feel terribly behind in the movie watching, but I'm almost done with this week, which has been completely crammed with bullshit work (and my procrastination of it through Angry Birds and the like).

But, I just made a purchase that was maybe 5% influenced by the Tapped movie we watched a few picks ago.

Product | Nalgene
They're awesome. I got two for several reasons, they're BPA-free, to start drinking more water, because I think buying bottled water is stupid (but I do need to carry it around in something), because by drinking more water I also save money on NOT buying sodas and powdered shit, I realized that while I don't buy bottled water, I still buy lots of bottled beverages and I feel I waste way too many bottles unnecessarily.

So yeah, maybe you guys should get some too! lol.

FUCK BOTTLED WATER

I enjoy the subtitles but I usually watch all tv with them on. It always seems to me that you miss some of the conversation of talk just trying to listen to it. I always get distracted by outside noises or whats going around me instead of the movie.

Watching Lady Vengeance and its pretty good. I don't know that many koreans but I dont suspect they would exit the room that dramatically. I like the story flow and if any of this happened to me I would love to be in the parents positions.
