Foxfire

Here's a wacky look into a piece of 1960's Georgian culture that I found on the intertubes:

Foxfire Magazine The Foxfire Fund, Inc.

Where you can learn things like midwifing, moonshining and making a water powered saw mill.

I own the first three volumes, but grew up with a full set. It's a preservation of our Appalachain culture and a continuing project at the Rabun Gap school--very much alive. There you can take classes in moonshining, cabin building, etc. I 100% love these books; they are some of my most treasured posessions.

This series of books was also turned into a stage version and later a movie starring John Denver and Jessica Tandy.

Thanks Doug! I love my firefox books but I'm missing #3 and 6.

Sometimes I'm reading them and think "you'll never find this bit of info on the internet" - guess I'm wrong.. heh.

I'm actually playing around with hewing logs like they describe in the chapter on log cabins. Doubt I'll even have much more than a barn, but it's good exercise. The chapter on hand digging water wells is pretty crazy too.

whatever happened to purchasing a modern home? or going to the liquor store? or hospital to give birth? or buy a chainsaw at home deport(now only $49.99 at participating locations)? why would we ever want to preserve archaic traditions? I think we should burn all copies of this series and leave Appalachian culture behind, given that this is the year 2010 and not 2000 and fucking redneck

and lose our rich traditions like face jugs and avoiding the feds? Never.

As long as I get the "How to Build a Still" article.

In all seriousness, we are considering building a small one. I believe it's currently legal in this state to still a few gallons for home use. I think it's a satisfying cultural project that'll keep me even further in touch with my Appalachian roots; SSG likes to drink.
