The point is the numbers are abstract, they don't correlate to anything for me. What 2066 calories and 108g of fat looks like isn't clear, so the results of choosing a 2000 or 1500 isn't immediately evident.

OK, here is some context. For every 3500 calories that you eat above what you use, you gain a pound. Eating a 2000 calorie meal over a 1500 calorie meal, and let's assume your other 2 meals that day are only normal size and that you burn off ALL of the calories from thise two plus 1500 from this meal (unlikely), then you have 500 extra calories. Do this 7 times in a year while eating only what you use for the rest of the year and you gain a pound that year.

Coke: 100 calories/8oz.
Pabst Blue Ribbon: 153 calories/ 12oz
Bud Light: 110 calories/12oz
Tequila shot: average 100 calories

Now, if you eat/drink only 100 extra calories per day over what you burn, you gain 10 pounds that year. You can burn 100 calories at normal speed on a stationary bike in 15 minutes or walking at 3mph for 15 minutes (average people walk 3-3.5mph).

So, that extra 500 calories above what you use daily is 1 hour 15 minutes extra effort to not gain weight. More if actually want to lose weight.

It's also important to note that calories, in liquid form, don't register in the brain towards that "you are full" feeling. This is why beer and starbucks with all of the frothy milk/cream etc will not cause your brain to go "hey, you are full, stop".

Chain restaurants are going to bullshit the numbers anyway. They will put up the calorie count without sauce, round the numbers out, etc. This is just a foot in the door to control what you eat in the name of health care costs, thats why its in the bill.

As the mandate hits home I imagine we'll continue to see stories like this. But who needs jobs anyway.
