That's why God invented hip flasks.

Sadly I have 3 CCTV cameras on me at all times.

I could probably get away with it anyway, my job is so simplistic, but I am not a huge drinker. I enjoy getting shitfaced once in awhile, but I can go without as well.

Now the fact that I cannot use my phone or listen to a podcast while working seriously annoys me.

Cameras on you - I can only assume you work in porn. Or that a key part of your job is asking "Do you want fries with that?". I hope, for both our sakes, it porn.

How about a bluetooth headset to listen to the podcast? Every so often, just say "Yeah, I know" or "Sounds good", and people will think you're on a call.

Hmm, porn....

I work security, so almost a step up from "fries with that"?

So as I sit and watch cameras to make sure all the bad, evil people do not do bad, evil things, my boss is watching to make sure I do not do bad, evil things.

Props for taking the first step Dean. Now you just take that next step. And when you've done that you take the next. Then the next. One step at a time.

I'm overwhelmed. Thanks guys.

I know that I'm a fricken basket case whenever I get on it and it's becoming a huge problem. I also know that I want to stop but the temptation will be there. Particularly this coming weekend. I'm heading interstate with my family to visit my hometown for my 40th birthday and I know that my parents are putting on a fairly big party for me on Sunday. There will be alcohol there of course and already I'm feeling the anxiety of not wanting to drink at all but knowing that I'll be tempted to have a beer or a wine if it's offered to me.

I was thinking of broaching the subject with my parents, to give them a heads up, but I lost my nerve to pick up the phone this evening and call them.

I dunno...

Dunno about that shit over the phone.

Also, have you really decided to stop, or is that a reaction to the events of the weekend?

Voice of experience talking...

When I was 6 my dad gave up drinking. I remember lots of things from about 3 years old and on, but I do not remember my dad ever drinking, or drunk...ever. I do remember clearly the time right after he quit. My dad was such an asshole when he drank, I guess it frightened me so much I block it. My brothers remember fights with his drunken friends, my mom crying....all sorts.

My dad would make drinks up and give them to my mom. He'd say "here, have this. I want a drink but can't have one". My dad is a dude that needs mellowing out not igniting so he just smoked up instead of drinking, a much much better outcome for the family. I think a lot of people who can't handle alcohol switch to pot. For the record, out of the 4 kids none of us are regular pot users so don't worry about the example. It's way better example to be mellow and relaxed with a joint then an abusive asshole with a can.
