iPods and KATG podcasts

With you guys listening to the podcasts this is probably where I'm gonna find the best answer to this.

With the new upgraded iPods being released I'm very tempted to get one. I currently have a 2Gb Nano which I use for podcasts and a 40Gb Creative MP3 player which has all my albums on it. I've got used to using the Nano and, as much as I like my Creative player, I prefer it for on-the-fly music.

I'd really like to combine the two but with the new Nano being 8Gb that won't be enough for both my albums and space for podcasts.

So, my question is what are the hard drive based iPods like when it comes to KATG podcasts?

How well would the battery cope with this? I'm guessing for the length of the podcast it would have quite a lot of hard drive activity which would affect how long it would last between charges. I'm assuming it can't read the whole thing into it's memory.

Thanks for any pointers

I have a 60gb iPod. It works just fine with podcasts without any noticable diffrence in power consumption.

Video is what drains the batteries faster, but they've improved battery life on the new video ipods. I listen to 10 hours a week of podcasts and charge it once a week.

I have a Creative 40Gb as well. Here's my question: do you really listen to ALL of your albums all the time?

I don't. I could probably get away with 5 or 6 albums plus the podcasts, and keep the albums on my backup HD.

My advice to you is to buy a new Shuffle and forgo the Nano. It'll probably last you two or three years with daily wear and you'll come to realize that Dio's Holy Diver is NOT a must have at every moment.

Shuffle is beat by so many more low-capacity players. Why are you suggesting that?

I've got a 20GB B&W 4G iPod (two years old) .. recently I tested the battery by playing KATG non stop until it was flat. 12 hours was what I got. I think that's quite good given the age of the device.

If you, in iTunes, make a playlist containing all the music you have played within the last 30, 90 and 180 days, you can get a good estimate of how much of your music collection you actually listen to. After two years, there are still songs that have not been played ever, on my iPod, adding the songs only played once, and the waste of space goes up even further.

The point is; you don't need to have space for everything. But you have to have space for what you like.

A 8GB (or 10,12 or whatever is current at the time) nano is going to replace my iPod sooner or later.

(There will probably be another Apple Event[TM] in October and another in january/february .. there always is, so don't be surprised when Apple introduces new iPod models)

I keep my itunes library on an external hard drive, as it was sucking up all the space on my PB

Well, cheers for the info so far.

I like the thought of only putting on music that's been listened to in the past few months but I have a few playlists set up in Winamp one of them being for hardly played tracks so that wouldn't work quite so well.

If the battery life is as decent as you say for the HDD based ones I think I might just go for one of them.

I have a 60GB video and listen to audio for about 10 hours per day since October 14th. The batteries have never run out in the middle of the day. I charge it every night.

As an alternative to a Nano. It was apparent to me that maybe he was allured by the opportunity of buying an Apple product.
