John Darnielle (aka Mr. Mountain Goats) on WTF
You guys are probably well aware of my extreme fixation on the music and mythology of the Mountain Goats. I understand it is now a character trait of mine and that it is likely very annoying to listen to whenever I bring it up, which is often.
BUT. You guys have to listen to this. It's so good. John Darnielle, who's the main creative force behind tMG, has had a helluva life. In, like, the bad way. http://www.wtfpod.com/podcast/episod...john_darnielle |

i love the mountain goats like nobody's business, so i'm cool with discussin them anytime and as much as possible. if someone isnt into it, they can go and rape themselves to death with a rusty screw driver.
how was the guest spot? i honesly abandoned WTF, so i missed it. |

The guy's certainly been through a lot of shit and has a compelling story but he talked like he'd just drunk 4 coffees and it got kind of exhausting to listen to. Much of the time it also felt like one of the more on-the-surface WTFs, in that he would say things like he was abused by his stepfather but not throw any light on what that abuse entailed. Not that it needed gory details, but "abuse" is a very general word.
There is one moment though that's one of the best moments I've heard on WTF (and I've heard almost all of them), where Marc asks him if he's forgiven his stepdad. It's a sublime, perfect, revealing, surprising moment. And if you love the Mountain Goats like nobody's business and already know what he's like you're probably used to his full-steam-ahead talking style and it wouldn't put you off as much as it did me, so you'd be a damn fool not to listen to it. You're not a damn fool are you Junk? |

im not. i think i mostly fell behind with WTF.
on a side note, i think transcendetal youth is the best album the MG had in a long time, mostly for how it can appeal to people who rejected Darnelle's most self absorbed material (like "Tle life of world to come" which is beautiful but oh so self indulgent) |
