Kansas City

So, I will be flying to Kansas on 29th, for 2 weeks, for a work related course on Ft. Leavenworth. Is anyone in that area / KC? Any restaurant or shopping suggestions? I've been working overseas here in Germany for a LONG time, so I'm looking forward to the short trip back to America (#1, Gold Medal!).

I'll be staying on Ft. Leavenworth in the hotel that is on post. I'm flying into KCI on the 29th and will pick up my rental car there, then drive to Leavenworth. I'll be in the area until Feb 11th, then back to Germany.

I haven't lived in the area in awhile, so someone like Punk'n will have to help you out a bit more. Just prepare to leave Leavenworth for any sort of fun. The base is like any base, but the city of Leavenworth is a shithole.

KC is like the chain restaurant capital of the US... Eat your way through!

Leavenworth is far away and there's nothing to do there. But if you're in the city, drink in Westport, not Power & Light. Eat at local places, not chains. And try the BBQ. I like Jack Stack's the best personally, but Oklahoma Joe's is supposed to be amazing too.

I'm kind of fucked as far as drinking goes since I have to drive back to Leavenworth. But thanks for the BBQ recommendations; I'll check them out!

The BBQ here is nothing special. I think the only reason we have a reputation for it is because we happen to have so many different BBQ places, but none of them are anything you can't get elsewhere.

EDIT: Oh, and try Power & Light, and Westport, if you want to check out the night-life or whatever. Once you can compare the two, I think it will be obvious why Punk'n prefers Westport, but I don't know you and P&L might be more your style.

Thanks for the additional info... As for the "not so special BBQ", I am still looking forward to it. I've been living/working here in Germany since '96 and, while I do love the German food and beer, they do not do BBQ.

After being over here for so long, I find that it's mainly little shit that people don't think much of that I crave, such as:
  • Mexican food
  • IHOP / Dennys
  • Best Buy
  • WalMart
  • JCPenney, Kohls, etc.
  • shopping on Sundays
  • speed signs in MPH
  • lotto scratch tickets
  • paying for stuff in US $
  • etc...

Pretty much the stuff that is "American".
