So I was thinking. Wouldn't this be more effective if we had a whole sub forum, and every person that had a podcast would make ONE thread for their podcast and everything would go there? People who are not feeling adventurous could even re-order the threads by # of replies and assume those were the most interesting to check out. Or we can even rate the threads I guess. Just something I was thinking about.

so i know how the setup should look, but i'm looking for some suggestions on equipment (mics, mixing board, digital recorder). i would like a decent mic, no b.s. logitech usb crap, willing to put some $ into it. from feedback/buzzing problems with that friend's podcast, the best solution we found was to use a separate digital recorder as opposed to directly to a pc. and something like an 8 input channel mixer would do.
thanks for any suggestions
I bought a Yamaha MG124cx console because it had built in compression and effects. The compressor sucks, and I never use the effects. I ended up getting a separate compressor (DBX 166xl). If I had to do it again I'd probably get a little Mackie sound console (with no built in crap), they're smaller than my Yahama and probably better. A sound engineer friend of mine said that Behringer also has some little mixers that are great.

For mics we use Shure Sm58's. There are better mics, but SM58's are pretty much bullet proof, and not too expensive. We record directly into my Mac laptop using Audacity and haven't had too many problems.

We got everything from ebay or BSWUSA.com. Good Luck!

thanks for sharing... i'm thinking of this for the mixer, Behringer
there was the same model for $50 more with the FX, but like you said, don't have any need for that shit.
for the mics, these Behringer's
for the recorder, Zoom

i attached a pdf of what it should look like setup. i picked that board because it can do USB output to the pc so i can broadcast live on like stickam or livevideo while recording to the Zoom recorder... in my head that should all work

Forgot all about the fact that I use an M-Audio box for the interface to my computer. The Behringer board's got it built in, sweet. I've never seen the mic you're looking at, but you can't beat the price. If you want higher quality mics, check ebay for used stuff. The pro mics are usually built pretty tough, so used ones are still good.

Set-up questions

Okay, so I want to start my podcast again, with more appropriate material for the show, a co host, etc..
I now have better equipment, but I need a little bit of help setting it all up, so what better place to ask than here, right?

I have an M-Audio mbox mini with mics, cables, and the like. Is it relatively easy to set that up to work with Audacity or am I better off just getting a regular mixer? Can I set up 2 different tracks for the 2 separate mics with the mbox?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Tanks!

I have the cheap M-Audio box, called a Fast Track USB. It's designed to record a guitar and vocals at the same time, so while it doesn't have inputs for two mics, I could record two mics if I plug one into the guitar 1/4" input (with an adaptor). I think Audacity would recognize it as two separate tracks.

I run everything through a mixer first, but I suppose you wouldn't have to if you only have two mics, depending on which M-Audio box you use.

One big thing- Make sure you go to preferences in Audacity and tell it to use the M-box as the mic input. I forgot that once and recorded a whole show through the built in mic on my laptop. It still showed that it was recording but the audio quality sucked ass.

New Litterbox!

Oh, and by the way, a new episode of the Litterbox is out. In this episode, Jennifer teaches us how to make an easy ten bucks, just by breaking condoms, and we all threaten to punch her in the vag.
