Dude, try to do a single podcast that's one hour long which anyone would want to listen to. Then worry about how hard marathons are.

very true (although i'm having a hard time adjusting to the fact that i have to work and have a regular life again. the constant option of being able to go upstairs and immediately have a good time is something i will treasure forever).
everyone did such a great job, all 76 hours are not only listenable, but enjoyable, and we had such an awesome time promoting the book of the century.
thank you to all that listened to matt, mcnally and I as we ploughed through the australian daytime hours.
what an awesome fucking time we had for three days straight!

I understand the withdrawls some of ya are feeling. Last night as the show was on it's 76th hour, I was thinking, "I got a few more hours in me, c'mon guys." But realistically? If you were paying attention, it sounds like the studio is awfully close to Keith and Chemda's room (which is also why they won't be lending out the studio for the Matt Bray morning zoo podcast). It was also starting to stank up in there, and the lower part of the house was beginning to look like a shipping container from China. (Maybe that's a NY thing: every few years a shipping container from China seems to wash up in Brooklyn with a bunch of half dead illegals packed in like sardines).

So relax, listen to some of last year's marathon or parts of this year you recorded. Write up some Haipu's. Or go out and get some fresh air. And of course, pray that they do this again next year. Now they have to break 76 hours. (I'm guessing 80, or the full 4 day 86. 2012 will be the full business week marathon, then the world ends).

I also have to give a big hand to Jesse Joyce. Even though Pat Dixon may be "1000 times funnier" than him, Jesse was a real trooper, holding together the late night (EST) hours with nothing but a fake cigarette and lots of diet soda, while many around him got truly messed up.

Jesse's face on the facebook KATG page is heartbreaking. He looks like a character from Apocalypse Now.

I think he's making the US Soldier signal for 'under duress'.

With that in mind, I'd donate to help them pay for a big guest house somewhere for them to do a marathon in the future. I would love a segment of "ask a cripple," a Miss KATG pageant, or anything else that can come of a big motherfuckin Party! Super Party!

Dixon The Ass. One of my favorite marathon moments.

Anyway, as to the question of whether doing a marathon podcast is hard: The answer is that everything is hard. Taking my experiences with KATG as an example, I've learned:

4 years ago: That doing 5 minutes of stand up is hard
That doing a KATG-style boy girl show is very hard

3 years ago: That doing 30 minutes of stand up is almost impossibly hard. Dodging tampons also hard.

2 years ago: That video editing takes forever, and can be hard

1 year ago: That being on KATG and dealing with random opinions from people with abstract internet names is hard, for some fucking reason

2 days ago: That running KATG is much harder than being on it. Dealing with feedback, figuring out mic levels, keeping the conversation going, trying to figure out how to deal with an unexpectedly drunk guest -- all much harder than I expected.

So, I think that sums it up. Everything, creative or technical, is at least a notch harder than it seems like it will be. Sorry that "a notch" isn't a very technical measurement. I hope that doesn't invalidate my informal study.

Pretty much nobody got more than a few hours sleep at a time during that marathon. I think Keith said he totaled about 8 hours during the whole thing. We were all wiped by the end. Though I do think it'd be fun to keep going until someone died.

Flame war much? I have to say that McNally, Matt B and Kyle did an exquisite job of keeping the podcast going - which i cannot thank them enough for.

Kudos to Keith and Chemda for pulling off another great fucking marathon - all the guests were excellent.

So who's got problems with it?
