Pretty standard tho.

Crossfit

Any of you guys doing it? I've seen it really work miracles on some people but the retardedly expensive cost of crossfit gyms has kept me from trying it. Anyone have stories/experiences?

No firsthand experience (because lulz prices).

From what I've heard, there are some good gyms. But since it's a franchise, there are a lot of shitty ones as well. Their trainer certifications are lol, and their philosophy is quantity over quality. High-rep plyometrics, high-rep oly lifts with poor form, and high-rep shoulder straining exercises (kipping pullups, overhead kb swings). And did I mention kipping pullups?

I knew a Crossfit trainer girl for a while and while I never went through her program, I saw what her and her students went through and it is definitely an ass-kicker. High intensity, non-stop action. It'll get you strong and lean, provided you have the discipline to keep up with it.

That right there is what I like to call the Personal Trainer Paradox (or perhaps there's already a name for it). Just because something is intense or complicated doesn't mean it's necessarily good or better than the simple. When a personal trainer has you do a whole bunch of exercises with kettlebells and bosu balls and TRX suspension, the PT is just trying to show his value and make you rely on him so that you keep paying him because the shit you're doing is so complicated that you couldn't do by yourself.

OMFG LOL AT MUDKIP PULLUPS.

Crossfit gyms at least have legit exercise equipment though, which is better than what most gyms have. The problem is you probably won't have experienced guidance. I'd totally pay like $100/mo for a place around here to just have rings, ropes, and platforms if they were open long hours (sadly the CFs here are restricted to classes, and the other non-cf gym like that requires sessions with a trainer, probably for liability reasons).

I'm totally biased, but if you can find an oly lifting gym in your area, I'd snap-take that over lolfit.

But I also only have "coaches" for fencing and oly, who are old dudes with experience who just give me bits of great insight. I'm not sure I'd ever pay a "trainer", who I envision as somebody around my age and mostly around for motivation. Oly is fun enough though that I actually want to go every time, so I don't need any additional motivating factors.

This summer I decided to step it up, so far I've managed to put on 10ish pounds of muscle. I work out an average of 5 times a week, each workout is started off with a 1 or 2, 7min mile run followed by a little over an hour of strength training and once a week I do a long run 6-8 miles. So far this has been a pretty successful summer but I'm still trying to get rid of 5lbs of fat that I feel should already be gone which i feel will give me the definition i want, but its been hard to since I'm trying to eat enough calories for muscle gain. I still hope to gain another 5lbs of muscle by the end of summer.

any suggestions?

I agree. There is nothing wrong with crossfit, it's just metabolic conditioning AKA circuit training.

The real issue is that circuit training is far from unique to Crossfit. The bigger issue is that many exercises are goofy at best and an injury waiting to happen at worst. The last complaint I have is that I see with it is that blindly following a set routine made for everyone can lead to overtraining, improper balance, and simply not reaching one's goals.
