The King of Kong - A Fistfull of Quarters

i walked into this not having the foggiest clue what to expect, other than the fact that it got glowing reviews.

By the time I was done, I had no doubt that this was the single best dork documentary since American Movie (COOOOVEN!)

There was a ton of humour, and an AWESOME, insane, otherworldly fuckin' mullet that can only be experienced.

You get to see this guy who has seemingly built his life off of a score on Donkey Kong, and his "rival" who has struggled to put his life in order.

Great flick, especially if you're a geek, and ESPECIALLY if you ever tried kicking ass at the worlds hardest games. Go MAPPY!!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0923752/

And if you still doubt? This dude is the hot sauce king, and holder of the Donkey Kong High Score.

the hot sauce guy with the high score was a total douche bag. He represents everything to be hated about supernerds. Really, sending out your high score goons to call you while you sit at home on the couch? Dude is a fucking wuss.

Walter, the ref of the league, should have nutted up and realised what a chump he is. He's the only reason the bullshit was tolerated.

I haven't seen it yet but my buddy was just telling me about it yesterday. His description of the guy was something along the lines of, "If Michael Scott from The Office were a real guy, who played Donkey Kong, that's the guy I'm watching."

I'm borrowing it tomorrow.

worse by a mile. His fretting when things get rough for him, and his assbuddy keeping him posted, all the while trying to seem cool and suave about sucking miserably in the shadow of these two...

teh awesome. I think someone needs for get Keith to see this, it's dashing the fuck out of the nerd/geeks he hates.

Mind you, they're all nerd/geeks - but at least the "good guy" isn't in a hugely bad way.

Hugely?

I need sleep

You may want to review on the net all the reasons why the movie is slightly different from reality. You can find them at various gaming sites.

Basically they distorted some things to make it more dramatic.
Like for example, the hot sauce guy actually played the other guy LIVE several times, and they were actually friendly, doing numerous interviews together during the course of the time period the film was made.

Also, they made it seem like when the other dude sent in the video and it was then rejected the high score went back to the hot sauce guy, but if you look at the records online, when his video was rejected for having a foreign board, the score actually reverted to..his OTHER high score. He already had beaten the hot sauce guy at that point and had a high score.

I enjoyed the movie, but make sure you don't use it as your only source, the actually story was much different, and much less dramatic so they needed to change it to make it enjoyable.

WHen i saw this at our local arthouse theatre people were able to play Donkey Kong on the screen using the original nintendo system. It was great b/c we were there when tey were setting up and the projectionist had to actually blow on the cartridge to make it work. sweet.

Great movie but you can tell that some of the stuff must have been staged....or at least it really seemed like it was.
