This. I also hate it when they have to make everything a psuedo-harem where all the girls are in love with the main character. The anime should be about the story, not playing into the perceived insecurities of their audience. Apparently every character base has to be a mary-sue.

Elfen Lied was only good for the first nine minutes of the first episode. That was pretty good.

For violent/actiony anime, I would recommend Ghost in the Shell, (movies and series) Ruroni Kenshin, Cowboy Bebob, Samurai Champloo, Ergo Proxy, Akira (utter mindfuck), Neon Genesis Evangelion, Afro Samurai, Trigun (though it is fairly silly sometimes). Also, for manga, go with Battle Royale, that's some of the sickest shit I've ever seen.

For comedy (it's fairly sparse, I don't like to many anime comedies) Welcome to the NHK, Midori Days, Cromartie High.

Edit time: I forgot some stuff.

Gunslinger Girls, Ranma 1/2 (read the manga, the anime is fairly shitty), Ghost Hound, Tsubasa, xxxHolic (it's not at all about sex), Darker than Black, Mushishi, Appleseed, Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit (gotta love that spear action <3). Also, ALL of the Evangelion movies. They can get pretty fucked up.
