"Like any medium". Hah. It shouldn't be hard for people to find something to impress me, then. I've managed to find good everything else on my own. But somehow even asking anime fans what to watch I still end up watching something terrible.
I dont get Akira either but there is some quality out there but again we are talking about cartoons. two good ones are:

Ninja Scroll
Grave of the Fireflies

The problem with the "legend" of Akira is that it's so 15 years ago. And the animation reminds us too much of early '80s anime, kind of like a Gundam or Voltron. The dub company was an early company, so you look at it and you see outdated animation and bad dubbing. It really lost a lot in the vast improvements made in dubbing/animation over the last 10-20 years.

I saw Akira 15 years ago and didn't like it then I get Cheesy dubbing most of the Gundam (0080, 0083 series) I saw back then were Fan-subs so production quality was real spotty and I enjoyed those; Akira is just shit.

I've been a Fan of Robotech for 20+ years I know it's cheesy but I fell in love with it as a child.

A good movie invokes emotion and Grave of the Fireflies invokes the hell out of some emotions. Nobody walks away from the passion of the christ happy and nobody should be happy watching this. But it is a good movie

Afro Samurai i checked out and its pretty awesome but the sequel wasn't as good i thought. eventually i found GANTZ which is amazing the anime is only about 2 season but the maga is much longer so i started that and its pretty awesome. GANTZ had lots of violence and sexual content.

I just downloaded a live action gantz movie. not sure how it is, and ive only seen a few episodes of the anime.

btw, if you havent seen this yet, its tehawesome!
Starblazers / Space Battleship Yamato

The dub companies seem to use "voice artists" instead of actors, and they overplay the everliving shit out of it. And that's probably fine for kids' shows, where you have to play big and stupid to hold the kids' attention, but for non-kid stuff like Cowboy Bebop it fucks the characters into oblivion.

I don't speak a word of Japanese but from the few animes I've seen those saki drinking mofos play the characters' voices infinitely cooler. If I'd seen this scene below in dubs before I'd watched the show with the real Japanese voices I never would have watched the show. In fact I can't even watch this whole scene in dubs it's so abysmal. It sounds childish. It hurts me right in my soul. These guys look the same as Jet and Spike, but they're not Jet and Spike. They're ass.
