The Dillinger Escape Plan

Is anyone else a fan of these guys? I just got to hear their new album and it's one of their best.

The Dillinger Escape Plan - When I Lost My Bet - YouTube

Theyr'e easily one of the top metal bands going, but I'll admit they aren't for everyone. From a technical standpoint there just isn't much than can rival them.

I have a hard time with their music at the moment. It's too over the top technical that it loses my interest. In saying that, I used to feel the same about Meshuggah but now I love their stuff. So I guess it will take a bit longer for me to "feel" it but I've not seen another band throw themselves into their music like these guys do. It looks painful being in that band.

I hadn't heard of DEP or Meshuggah, but they both sound alright to me. I'm surprised you'd call Meshuggah very technical, but that's probably just my ignorance. There's bands out there that are just ba-ba-ba-ba-babababababababababababa-ba-ba-bababababa-ba, y'know? DEP is bordering on that, but I can at least follow what's going on. It's not a constant blanket of sound and sucker-punch tempo changes.

That constant change of tempo changes is incredibly technical to me. They're not a meedly-meedly-meeeeee band but polyrhythms are their big thing. Listen to "Bleed"

Ooof, that's too metal for me. I don't know why I can't get behind it, but something about music like that is immediately off-putting to me.

Speaking of things Dillinger, though, do you guys like Dillinger Four? It's punky.

Meshuggah has always had this reputation of being incredibly technical as far as rhythm changes and time signatures. I like a lot of their songs, but I don't care for their singer so I'm pretty mixed on them.

It's pretty hard to get over how dissonant they are. They play the most intense music I've ever heard, even more-so than any death-metal I've heard. I probably listened to their first album over 30 times before I could begin to wrap my head around what they were doing. I think what impresses me more than even their technical skill is that they basically created a new style of music (combining jazz rhythms with really dissonant technical metal) that no one could really copy.

I've heard of Dillinger Four but I never really listened to them. I'll have to check that out. Do you ever listen to Fucked Up Danny? They're one of my favorite punk bands, and the only one I've really been listening to lately.
