I listened to the "Abandoned Cities" podcast today from HowStuffWorks - Learn How Everything Works! ... and it occurred to me to post this thread before I head out for the East Coast.

Any body out there into urban exploring?

Yes, but you didn't show those pictures. I'd post photos of the homes my parent's grew up in, but...oh yeah, they are burnt down shells that now look like fields.

I've heard this even years ago, that parts of greater Detroit are basically modern day ghost towns. Maybe some new growth cities (LV, Houston, etc) will soon see the same thing.

The Boom-Bust cycle of Detroit and a few other rust-belt cities should be an important lesson about getting too entrenched in one industry. In WI right now they are making a big push for Biotechnology which figures to be a growth industry for several years but, the bottom could drop out of that too in a few decades.

I think of Detroit as that one drunk uncle at the family gathering. Every year you think, "That's it, he's finally hit bottom and can start rebuilding his life." But, every year, he manages to get his load on and tell another more awful story about how he's fucked it up again, worse than ever.

I'm going to have to come up with a new forums name ... suggestions?

Yes. Seriously painful to look at bathroom tile but much of it was very cool. That area has some fabulous history, the architechture is wonderful and the Pewabic tile is worth killing for; but if you look at the crime rates for the neighborhood, I do not understand how people plunk down half a mil for a fixer-upper in a get-shot-at-while-you-unload-your-groceries-neighborhood. Of course, no one is paying that now.
