Are you anywhere near the JMZ? Take a look at how the latticework holding up the subway is crammed full of garbage. I'm not judging. I'm just saying: Look at it. Stare at it. Think about how this is where you live.

I feel you on the apartment thing, though. I'm hopefully nailing a place down in Toronto this evening, and it'll be nice to have that particular worry off my back.

No, I'm near the IRT lines (near Nostrand like wookietv said). Spooky, I'm white, and I've spent most of my life in bad neighborhoods. This really isn't bad. My last neighborhood was part of the Latin Kings' territory in Chicago. I've never had much trouble because I look like I could be a bad guy on Law & Order and because I have a basic sense of what to avoid. Groups of teenagers are pretty much always bad (either for crime or for general dickery), but this neighborhood is mostly middle-aged people, so it works for me.

This isn't a step down. I moved from a frequently violent neighborhood in Chicago to an occasionally violent neighborhood in New York. I call that progress.

You sound like a New Yorker already: Talking about bad things as though they were good. I wish I had learned how to do that.

Fuck I'd take an occasionally violent neighborhood in New York over a sleepy town in Florida

Yup that's what I was thinking. My 900 sq ft apartment in a not at all violent area just outside of Portland only costs $650 a month for the whole apartment. I don't think I could do NYC, seems unecessarily expensive.
