oh those silly retards
http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Movi....ap/index.html
Dozens protest at 'Tropic Thunder' premiere "Tropic Thunder" is pushing the envelope too far for groups representing the mentally disabled. protesters Dozens of people from organizations such as the Special Olympics and the American Association of People with Disabilities protested the movie-industry spoof across the street from the film's Los Angeles premiere at Mann's Bruin Theatre on Monday. The protesters held up signs with slogans such as "Call me by my name, not by my label" and chanted phrases like "Ban the movie, ban the word." The groups are outraged over scenes featuring the liberal usage of a disparaging term used to describe the mentally disabled. In the movie, director and co-star Ben Stiller plays a fame-hungry actor cast in a war movie who previously had a role as a mentally disabled character named Simple Jack. The DreamWorks film, which opens Wednesday, also stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black. "When I heard about it, I felt really hurt inside," said Special Olympics global messenger Dustin Plunkett. "I cannot believe a writer could write something like that. It's the not the way that we want to be portrayed. We have feelings. We don't like the word retard. We are people. We're just like any other people out there. We want to be ourselves and not be discriminated against." this only make me want to see the movie even more :P ![]() |

OK I realize I'm half-retarded for speaking directly to Mr Dustin Plunkett here, especially on a message board which he cannot read but here I go anyways:
Do you even know what feelings are? Yeah but you also can't seem to believe two plus two equals four. Well checking the voting record from the last election and looking at items on the ballot this time around, you may have a point there. Well if you'd stay home, instead of bugging the rest of us by your public presence, we wouldn't discriminate against ya. OK, I lie. We so totally would! Still, this and people protesting Robert Downey Jr's character are just those people who just look for any reason to act angry or protest. I say while some jokes against the mentally handicapped can go too far (and really there's no limits to comedy right?) I think we should feel free to mock and poke fun at those who protest for what we deem to be stupid reasons. This would fit into that category for me. |

Well they have the right to protest, that is a given. And honestly, special interest groups are our last best hope to maintain or civil liberties (what remains). On the other hand, the writer has a right to make a movie about whatever the hell they want to. I defend that stance as well. Basically all the protesting is is a public announcement of this group's disapproval. Nothing more.

Funny thing is, it is advocates for retards from what I gather. How do actual retards feel about this movie? Do they find it so funny they drool all over themselves and hit ther chest with the side of their hands more frequently than usual?
