Olympic Boxing = Bullshit

We have 1 TV here, and since Olympics are the biggest thing going on right now, thats all that is on.

The boxing works on a point system, with the one with the most at the end of 4 rounds the winner. Well, I just saw the Men's Light Fly (48kg) Semifinal bout between Ireland's Paddy Barnes and China's Shiming Zou. The bout ended 15-0 in Zou's favor. However, Zou was throwing wild puches the whole fight and Barnes was being much, much more technical. Zou would swing wildy and catch Barnes with the side of his glove, and be awarded a point. Barnes would counter and land a nearly perfect punch to Zou's face, and not be awarded a point. What the fuck?

In a bout earlier this week, an American Heavywieght, Demtrius Andrade, left the ring because the judges had done the same thing to him, the replay showed at least 6 points that were not awarded, and would have won him the bout, and a shot for a medal. He is quoted as saying, “I thought I landed and threw a lot of punches, but the judges weren’t giving me my points and there was nothing I could do about it. I tried to go to the body, slow him down, it was working but I wasn’t getting any points for it. I was laughing because I knew I was fighting a Korean, and I was thinking they might pull the Jones on me and they did. Jones lost to the Korean and so did I.”

I thought that the Olympics were supposed to be the perfect example of sportsmanship and fair competition for the world, but with obviously biased results, what is the true purpose of the games?

When I was a kid, I loved the Olympics. I would watch as much of them as I could, no matter what event, I just wanted to see the best athletes in the world compete on a level playing field. This is just another part of my childhood crushed.

I'm not interested until they make Chess Boxing an Olympic sport.

Olympic boxing's a joke. The scoring has been so atrocious it's unwatchable.

Oh well, there's good boxing to be found elsewhere. But I could give two fucks for whoever wins gold in boxing.

It's utterly depressing. The paddy Barnes fight really disgusted me. I couldn't fucking believe it. On the one hand, olympic boxing has always been rife with controversy and corruption. On the other hand, I fucking hate that it can't be better. I think they should remove boxing from the olympics, as there are more credible competitions out there. The reference to the Jones fight in Seoul shows just how fucked up the system has been for so long.

In my opinion, they shouldn't have any competition that isn't objectively measured. If a judge is involved, throw out the whole sport.

Any sport where they determine the winner by judges is going to be biased unless they have impartial judges. I say get rid of all the sports from the Olympics that require judges and get back to real competion.

Looks like Britain is protesting a taekwondo judge after a match where they were blatantly helping the Chinese side with their judging. And it was accepted.

China clearly has had a hand in the judging at Beijing.

Yea, the judging is a joke with many of the events besides Boxing. I was watching a Taekwondo match yesterday with Australia against some other country and it was laughable some of the points the other country was getting awarded.

That Paddy Barnes match was terrible though, he was clearly the better fighter.
