The Orange Box... problems

i recently purchased The Orange Box for PC. for those who dont know, thats Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Team Fortress 2, and Portal, all in one orange box, out out by Valve. when i try to play HL2 i get an error message and then it closes the game. i make it through the Valve title screen and first loading screen just fine, but thats when this pops up:

before you ask, yes i have Steam. it makes you install it before you can install the games.

i went to Valves online help page, but it was useless. thats why im turning to the forums. i know at least five of you out there know what i should do to fix the problem, and all suggestions are welcome.

Look for an app called memtest, run it. That looks like RAM that's going bad, either that or a buggy install, I am assuming you already uninstalled and reinstalled though.

no, i havent uninstalled/reinstalled yet... maybe i should...

That is one of my favorite error messages. What's with the quotes? The memory could not be "read". So like, figuratively read?

sounds weird but set your screen res to 800 x 600 for the first run. set video settings to your choice in-game. quit. put res back to watever it was before. should start fine now.

I've had a similar prob with steam apps.

Delete all the files on your computer. Then drop it on the floor.

It'll work fine after that.

oh shit i forgot to mention. make an image of your current setup and then restore from that image after reinstalling windows. that way, you won't have to reinstall all applications after reinstalling windows.

hope you didn't start reinstalling windows before taking the image
