Pew study finds more countries trust Russian President Putin than Bush to ...

“do the right thing regarding world affairs.”

Other interesting results from the report issued yesterday:

Since 2002, the image of the United States has declined in most parts of the world. However, three African countries have a more favorable view of the US than the US does of itself.

The good news?

Apparently, most people outside the US are savvy enough to separate the American people from the American government-- in many countries, the American people get better ratings than does the U.S. generally.

This is silly. In a one-to-one comparison, Putin is definitely more dangerous than Bush. I don't worry about Bush, I worry about those who are pulling his strings ("Shooter" Cheney et. al.).

Foreign policy is set by the president and his advisers. The president chooses a VP...cheney in this case...as well as his cabinet.

"Bush" means the Bush regime. "Putin" means the Putin regime.

How is that silly?

If you are arguing that cheney has too much power, I agree. However, he only has as much power as bush allows him to have.

Hi quad. I posted this because I assume MSNBC will not report it.

I could be wrong, but whatever.

Silly or not, it is what people think/feel, and that makes it interesting.

Anti-Americanism is practically a sport in my country - we practice a very casual dislike for American politics and culture.

Based on this study, apparently you are not alone.

I guess you give Bush a lot more credit than I do. I think Bush is the one who was "allowed" to have power, not vice versa.

As for the other point, it is my contention that for all of Bush's flaws, Putin is less trustworthy with regards to world affairs for the simple fact that the constraints on his power are vastly weaker. You say that it is the regime that is implied, not just the man. Well in today's Russia, the man and the regime are one and the same. The same cannot yet be said, thankfully, for the USA.

Your statement about Putin's approval rating is a little misleading Oslin.

As Bebe pointed out in her comment, disliking America is a sport, sort of like our (American) dislike of France. It's not really a thought out policy position, and it would never translate into anything in the real world.

Finally, who cares if they like us? The top country is always going to breed resentment. Britain and France had their haters in their heyday too, but they didn't let "world opinion" sway them.

If Russia were the world hegemon you would have your complaints about them too. They would just be harder to express with that Cossack boot on your throat.

Pax Americana. Like it or lump it niggas.
