1297. The Battle of Stirling Bridge. We all have to sit around and watch Braveheart together, eat haggis and drink beer in honor of William Wallace.

Closer to heart would be 1961 when Hurricane Carla struck Texas. Considering Hurricane Ike perhaps it's best to remember that.

In a nearly as tragic event, in 1970 the Ford Pinto was introduced.

This day in 1226, the Roman Catholic church began practising the Eucharist.

Doesn't creep me out, just reminds me of how horrible it was for awhile since my uncle died in the 2nd tower.

I'm just sick of hearing peoples "my special situation involving 9/11" stories. Every attention hungry girl has some sad, sad related tale and this is her day every year to tell you about it...

You know, thousands of Americans have died in Iraq since the war started. People die senselessly ALL THE TIME. Genocide is committed all over the world all the time. More children die of malnourishment or dysentery than this every day. Why are these 4000-ish people so special?

Also, I am not being snide; I really want to know. Why are American's so focussed on this?

I think it still has the weirdness vibe as it's the modern equivalent of the Kennedy assassination - by which I mean it's a global event that EVERYONE remembers where they were and what they were doing when they heard about it. Most folks I know can describe their experience of that day with some clarity. Defining world events are rare.

Similar memory resonators, but far lesser events, might be the 2000 new year (or possibly for some the death of Princess Di).

Next stop must be landing a dude on the moon... again (but live and in high definition)
