well. it's not. god isn't real. all of this, all of it, it's a study of ourselves. how and what /we/ think.

perception is everything. when we talk about the word of god it's always the perceived word of god. and if that's what we're buying in to, there's no reason why we can't allow it to shift as our cultural vision shifts. i think there's still enough truth in there to be useful to folks who faithfully seek understanding in their personal lives. there has to be. it's been around a long fucking time.

religion as a personal path of discovery is aces ok. religion as a political tool, not so good.

/and/ mountain people. great. i'm well acquainted with the inbred families in the county i grew up in. i've had meals in their homes. i went to school with their children. know what i didn't do? treat them like they were less human than me.

wanna know what i know about Africa? dear friend and mentor of mine did 6 months of immersive research in Uganda and Rwanda in 2011 as a United States Artist Lowe Fellowship recipient; they essentially gave him $50K to do whatever he wanted and he chose them. he got back about the same time as me (i was doing a residency in CA at the time) and we met up in Tennessee to spend some time with a dying friend. over her death bed for the next few hours and later, pretty regularly throughout the last couple years, i listened to their stories. i learned their names. make all the horseshit assumptions you want about those people, but i won't stand here and be accused of ignorance or blindness. i also won't sit idly by and let insane levels of bigotry slide in this community. it's unseemly and you aren't being funny.

there are places in Africa that are regular ole places. there are places where people are desperately trying to maintain their humanity and rebuild their entire worlds--you will rarely find such triumphs of the soul and community stateside. it's wide. open /your/ eyes.

I've lived in South Africa all my life, same with my family. I've been robbed once or twice, no biggie. I'm sure a lot of people in other countries have. The only time my brother has ever been a victim of crime is when he traveled to Australia.

I haven't been here long, but I've read a few of Scumhook's other posts so it didn't offend me. He's trying to be provocative, and I get it. I do think that if he actually held these bigoted views he wouldn't voice them on the forum.

Either way, even if he (or others) say something offensive and meant it, it's some person on the internet, I decided long ago that if I was going to stay online I'd have to ignore shit like that.
